Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has reached a major milestone, selling 1 million copies just three days after its launch on April 24. Developer Sandfall Interactive shared the news on Twitter, thanking fans for their strong support.

"And here we are. Three days after launch. One million copies sold. Thank you for believing in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33," the studio wrote in its announcement.

Earlier, Sandfall Interactive had reported that the game sold 500,000 copies on its first day alone.

The new 1 million figure includes both digital sales and units shipped to retailers. However, it does not account for players accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass, as confirmed by the developer. This suggests that the total players count might be even higher if they reported it like Ubisoft did with Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Despite competition from the surprise release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered just days earlier, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has managed to carve out a strong position in the market. Publisher Kepler Interactive even joked about the rivalry, comparing it to the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon — a comparison that seems fitting given the success of both games.

At a price of $50 per copy, the game's first three days of sales could represent approximately $50 million in gross revenue. This is a remarkable achievement for Sandfall Interactive, a studio founded only five years ago with a team of just 30 developers.

According to data from SteamDB, the game also reached a peak of 98,591 concurrent players on Steam as of Saturday. Based on player activity, it is expected that Sunday’s numbers likely crossed the 100,000 mark.

The success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 goes beyond strong sales. It currently holds the highest review scores for any game released in 2025, with a 92 on Metacritic and a 91 on OpenCritic. These ratings place it alongside other critically acclaimed titles like Split Fiction and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, according to industry review aggregators.

Inspired by classic RPGs like Final Fantasy and Persona, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 tells the story of a group called the Expeditioners navigating a fractured, post-apocalyptic world. Each year, a mysterious entity known as The Paintress selects a number, and anyone older than that number is erased. Players embark on a journey across the continent to challenge The Paintress and break the deadly cycle.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It is also accessible to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers at no additional cost.
