A new job listing from CD Projekt Red suggests that the upcoming sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, known as Project Orion, will include both single-player and multiplayer gameplay options.
The Polish game studio is looking for a Senior Gameplay Programmer whose responsibilities will include "building and maintaining gameplay systems that can work both in single-player and multiplayer." This job posting strongly indicates that players might be able to explore the futuristic world of Night City with friends in the next Cyberpunk game.
Project Orion was first announced in 2022, with full production officially beginning in February 2024 at CD Projekt Red's Vancouver and Boston studios. While the game is still in pre-production, the company has been actively expanding its development team for the project.
Between October 2024 and February 2025, CD Projekt Red hired 57 developers, with 20 specifically assigned to work on Project Orion. This staffing increase shows the company's serious commitment to the sequel's development.
This isn't the first hint of multiplayer functionality for the Cyberpunk universe. Previous job listings have also sought developers with multiplayer experience. In November 2024, the company advertised for a Senior Combat Designer position that listed multiplayer game experience as "nice to have." Earlier, in August 2024, CD Projekt Red was searching for a Lead Network Programmer to "spearhead the development of online functionalities" for an upcoming project.
While these earlier job postings suggested the possibility of multiplayer features, the newest listing provides the strongest evidence yet that Project Orion will definitely include some form of multiplayer option.
For fans of traditional single-player experiences, CD Projekt Red's CEO Michael Nowakowski recently reassured players that "cutting-edge single-player games are not going anywhere." This statement, combined with the new job listing mentioning both single-player and multiplayer systems, suggests that Project Orion will offer both gameplay styles.
The sequel is still in its early stages, and few details are currently available about the game's setting, story, or how closely it will connect to the original Cyberpunk 2077. The development timeline and potential release date remain unknown.
The original Cyberpunk 2077 launched as a single-player experience in December 2020. After a troubled launch, the game received numerous updates and eventually an expansion called "Phantom Liberty" in 2023, which significantly improved its reception among players and critics.
