Elden Ring just hit a monumental milestone: 30 million copies sold worldwide.Â
Developer FromSoftware announced the news on Twitter, thanking players for their incredible support three years after the game's original launch.
Released in February 2022, Elden Ring quickly became a global phenomenon thanks to its sprawling open world, brutal combat, and unforgettable storytelling. It has even outsold the entire Dark Souls series combined — which had capped at 27 million units — cementing its place as one of the most successful games of the modern era.
A Sales Journey Worth Celebrating
Here’s a quick look at how Elden Ring’s numbers grew over time:
March 2022: 12 million copies sold within three weeks of launch
May 2022: 13.4 million sold in the first five weeks
February 2023: 20 million sold by the first anniversary
June 2024: 25 million ahead of Shadow of the Erdtree DLC release
September 2024: 28.6 million copies sold
April 2025: 30 million milestone reached
Even three years in, Elden Ring is pulling in fresh players. According to the latest Circana report for the U.S., Elden Ring is still among the top 20 best-selling games of 2025, holding strong at #19. In March alone, it ranked #16, with Assassin’s Creed Shadows leading the month and Monster Hunter dominating the yearly charts so far.
Over on Steam, Elden Ring has recently become the 11th game ever to pass 1 million reviews, sitting at over 1,046,000 reviews — a whopping 92.8% of them positive.
Expanding the Elden Ring Universe
FromSoftware isn’t slowing down. In fact, they’re about to open up the world of Elden Ring even further:
Elden Ring: Nightreign is on the way this May. This standalone multiplayer co-op survival game lets teams of three players explore a procedurally generated world called Limveld — a twisted reimagining of Limgrave. Players will battle monsters, survive environmental hazards, and face a climactic final boss battle, all while the playable area shrinks over time. (Yes, you can still play solo if you’re feeling brave.)
Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 later this year. It’ll bundle the base game and the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC for Switch’s new hardware, giving players a full portable experience of the Lands Between.
A New Exclusive and a Peek at the Future
FromSoftware is also working on a brand-new exclusive for Nintendo Switch 2: The Duskbloods. Revealed during a Nintendo Direct, this upcoming PvPvE multiplayer game is set in an original dark fantasy world and launches in 2026.
Some longtime fans voiced concerns about FromSoftware leaning too heavily into multiplayer territory. But studio president Hidetaka Miyazaki was quick to clear things up in a recent interview:
"This [The Duskbloods] is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn't mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward."Â
In other words: yes, they’re exploring new ideas, but no, single-player epics aren’t going away.
Will There Be an Elden Ring 2?
As for a full-fledged Elden Ring 2? Miyazaki has previously said there are no immediate plans — but he’s also been careful not to shut the door completely. So hope is still alive.
Meanwhile, there’s even more potential excitement brewing. George R.R. Martin, who helped create the world of Elden Ring, teased that early discussions about a possible movie adaptation are happening. Speaking at Fan Fest 2025, Martin said:
"Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring."
It’s not official yet — but for fans who dream of seeing the Erdtree towering over a big screen, this is the most promising sign so far.
