Square Enix has officially confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade will be released on the Nintendo Switch 2, marking the first time the reimagined RPG will be available on a non-PlayStation console since its 2020 debut.

The surprise announcement was made during the Partner Spotlight segment of the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, with FF7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi appearing to deliver the news. While no specific release date was given, Hamaguchi teased that players can “look forward to more updates” regarding the port.

A Major Shift for Square Enix

For over five years, Final Fantasy 7 Remake remained tied to PlayStation platforms, with only PC players getting access via later ports. Xbox users have continued to wait — and now, it’s Nintendo’s upcoming hardware that’s next in line to host the acclaimed remake.

Industry analysts see this as part of Square Enix’s evolving multiplatform strategy, especially in light of recent reports that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s PlayStation-exclusive release may have fallen short of expectations.

With its significantly upgraded specs, the Switch 2 is powerful enough to handle technically demanding titles like Intergrade — a key factor in Square's decision.

What’s Included in the Intergrade Edition?

The version heading to Switch 2 is Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Intergrade, an enhanced edition that originally launched on PS5 and PC in 2021. It includes:

  • Graphical and performance improvements

  • Additional cutscenes

  • The Intermission DLC, featuring fan-favorite ninja Yuffie Kisaragi in a side story that connects directly to the main narrative.

For those unfamiliar, Final Fantasy 7 Remake isn’t just a visual upgrade of the 1997 classic — it’s a ground-up reimagining, with a new battle system, expanded lore, and a story split into a three-part saga. Remake was the first entry, Rebirth followed in 2024, and the third and final chapter has yet to be officially revealed.

Critics praised its modernized combat, emotional storytelling, and stunning visuals, making it one of the most celebrated RPG revivals in recent memory.

So far, only Remake: Intergrade has been confirmed for Switch 2. But Hamaguchi’s comment about “more updates” on the FF7 Remake project for Switch 2 has sparked speculation that Rebirth — and potentially the third game — could be on the horizon for Nintendo’s next-gen platform.

While the original Final Fantasy 7 has been playable on the current Switch for years, this will be the first time Nintendo players can experience the full remake treatment.
