God of War Greek Saga

Fans of the God of War series might soon have reason to celebrate. Rumors suggest that Sony is working on a remaster of the original God of War Greek trilogy, with an announcement possibly coming on March 22 - the franchise's 20th anniversary in North America.

According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, Sony Santa Monica might be collaborating with Nixxes Software to enhance the original games for modern gaming systems. While an earlier rumor claimed the announcement would happen during February's State of Play event, that didn't materialize.

The potential remaster would likely include significant visual improvements compared to previous rereleases. The first two God of War games were remastered for PlayStation 3, and the third game for PlayStation 4. Fans can also expect some quality-of-life improvements, though it's unlikely to be a full remake given the massive scope that would entail.

In addition to that, Amazon Prime Video is also bringing the TV adaptation of the popular game. The TV project recently underwent a change in leadership, with Ronald D. Moore (known for Battlestar Galactica and Outlander) replacing the original showrunner in late 2024. While the original Greek saga provides the backstory for Kratos, reports suggest that this series focuses on the newer Norse mythology games instead of the Greek era.

For those unfamiliar with the series, God of War follows Kratos, a Spartan warrior who becomes the Greek God of War and eventually destroys the Greek pantheon after the Olympians killed his wife and daughter. The 2018 reboot took Kratos to Norse mythology, where he faced gods like Odin and Thor.

The original games, voiced by Terrence C. Carson (before Christopher Judge took over in the 2018 reboot), were praised as some of the best hack-and-slash titles of the early 2000s. They featured fast-paced action that many fans still cherish despite their age.

Adding to the excitement, Tom Henderson from the Insider Gaming Weekly Podcast shared a tip claiming the next game in the series might be a prequel or reboot set in Greece rather than Egypt, which had been previously rumored.

This contradicts earlier speculation about the series heading to Egyptian mythology next.

Given that God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarok (2022) were released four years apart, 2026 would fit the pattern for a new game. An announcement this year would match the typical development and marketing timeline.

Whatever happens, now all eyes are on March 22.
