Hollow Knight: Silksong May Finally Release This Year, Says Xbox Executive

Hollow Knight Silksong

Fans of Hollow Knight have been waiting six years for the sequel, and now there's a hint it might arrive in 2025. The head of ID@Xbox recently mentioned Hollow Knight: Silksong alongside other games set to release this year.

In a new Xbox Wire post, ID@Xbox director Guy Richards listed several upcoming indie partnerships. After naming "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33," "Descenders Next," and "FBC Firebreak," Richards added "and of course Hollow Knight: Silksong too!"

This simple mention has gotten fans talking. The original Hollow Knight, released in 2017, is considered one of the best indie games ever made. The challenging 2D Metroidvania earned widespread praise, with its Nintendo Switch version scoring 90 on Metacritic.

The Xbox Wire post highlights how the ID@Xbox program has launched over 1,000 games in the past year, including hits like "Balatro" and "Phasmophobia." Since 2013, the program has paid more than $5 billion to indie developers worldwide.

What's interesting is that the other games Richards mentioned have confirmed 2025 release dates. "Descenders Next" and "Expedition 33" are coming next month, while "FBC Firebreak" is expected later this year. This might suggest Silksong is also planned for 2025.

Silksong has had a complicated development journey. It started as DLC for the first game but grew into a full sequel. At Xbox's 2022 Summer Game Fest, the game showed a new trailer and announced it would launch day one on Xbox Game Pass.

That showcase promised all featured games would release within 12 months, pointing to a June 2023 launch for Silksong. But as that deadline approached, developer Team Cherry announced a delay with no new date. Since then, there's been almost complete silence.

Some fans wonder if Silksong might appear at Nintendo's Switch 2 Direct on April 2. However, the game's marketing partnership with Xbox might make this unlikely, and Nintendo will probably focus on their new console and own first-party games.

While this mention doesn't guarantee Silksong is coming soon, it does suggest Microsoft believes the game will eventually release. For now, fans will need to stay patient and keep an eye out for official announcements from Team Cherry.
