Monster Hunter Wilds has achieved an extraordinary feat by becoming the best-selling game of 2025 in the United States in just two days. Released on February 28, the game managed to top the US sales charts based on Circana data measured up to March 1, showcasing its immense popularity and market impact in the American gaming market.
According to Circana's February report for the US market, Monster Hunter Wilds not only dominated the monthly sales charts but instantly became the year's top-selling title in the country, surpassing Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which had held the position for months.
Circana analyst Mat Piscatella also noted that the launch sales of Wilds in the U.S. were more than twice those of Monster Hunter Rise throughout its entire debut month in March 2021.
The game is the best-selling game of February across each of the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC ecosystems. However Steam has proven to be a particularly strong platform for the title in the US market, accounting for over half of the game's total dollar sales in the country despite widely reported performance issues on PC.
The game broke records on Steam, reaching a peak of 987,482 concurrent players on launch day and climbing to 1,384,608 by March 1. This places it fifth on Steam's all-time peak concurrent users chart, behind only mega-hits like PUBG, Black Myth: Wukong, Palworld, and Counter-Strike 2.
Critical reception for Monster Hunter Wilds has been largely positive in the American market. The game holds a "Mighty" rating on OpenCritic with an average score of 89/100 based on 165 reviews, with 94% of critics recommending it. Metacritic scores range from 88/100 on PC to 90/100 on PS5. IGN, a major US-based gaming outlet, awarded it an 8/10, praising the refined combat and smoother mechanics while noting a lack of challenge. GamesRadar+ was more enthusiastic with a 4.5/5 rating, calling it "the new peak of Monster Hunter."
Fan reception in the US has varied by platform. While PlayStation and Xbox users have responded overwhelmingly positively (92.2% positive on PSN and 90% positive on Xbox), Steam reviews have been more mixed. Approximately 54-57% of the Steam reviews are positive, with many negative reviews citing poor optimization and technical issues.
Despite these technical challenges on PC, Monster Hunter Wilds has clearly resonated with American players enough to drive record-breaking sales in an incredibly short timeframe.
