Outward Surpasses 3 Million Players as Sequel News Looms

Outward, the open-world survival RPG from Nine Dots Studio, has officially crossed the 3 million player mark across all platforms and editions.

The milestone, reached on September 16, 2025, comes six and a half years after the game’s original launch in March 2019, a rare feat for a title that’s always embraced a "hardcore first" design philosophy.

For those who haven’t ventured into Aurai yet, Outward isn’t your typical fantasy RPG. You’re not a chosen hero, you’re just an ordinary adventurer trying to survive. That means managing hunger, thirst, temperature, and fatigue while navigating dangerous dungeons, unpredictable weather, and hostile creatures. It’s a game that demands preparation, patience, and a willingness to learn from failure.

Speaking on the achievement, Guillaume Boucher-Vidal, CEO and Creative Director at Nine Dots Studio, described the moment as "surreal," adding:

"This level of success opens so many doors. It sets us free. It gives us the means and the courage to bet it all on ourselves. We have an interesting future ahead of us, one in which we can own up to both our successes and our failures."

The announcement coincides with the recent release of Outward: Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch. Developed in collaboration with Sneaky Box, the port brings the full experience, including both DLCs (The Three Brothers and The Soroboreans), plus new weapons, dungeons, and quality-of-life improvements to the hybrid console.

And there’s more on the horizon. Nine Dots has confirmed that fresh details on Outward 2 will be revealed next week. The sequel promises to double down on the series’ signature survival mechanics, offer multi-class combos, and maintain its "believable and relatable" approach to adventuring.

Outward is currently available on PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, and now Nintendo Switch, with solo play, online co-op, and local split-screen options.
