Silent Hill f, the upcoming entry in the famous horror game series, has become the first Silent Hill game to receive an 18+ rating in Japan.

The Japanese-language reveal trailer, which was released on March 14, clearly displays the game's mature ratings across different regions: Mature in the United States, PEGI 18 in Europe, and CERO:Z in Japan.

Earlier Silent Hill titles developed in Japan, including the original Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill: The Room, all received CERO:C ratings, which are suitable for players 15 and older.

Even games developed outside Japan typically received CERO:C or CERO:D (17+) ratings. Notably, the recent Silent Hill 2 Remake by Polish Studio Bloober Team maintained a CERO:C rating in Japan despite receiving mature ratings in Western countries.

First Mainline Entry in 13 Years

This upcoming game represents the first mainline entry in the celebrated horror franchise in 13 years, generating considerable excitement among longtime fans.

First announced in 2022, Silent Hill f takes players to 1960s Japan and follows the story of Shimizu Hinako, a teenager struggling under pressure from friends, family, and society.

The game's story was written by Ryukishi07, the creator of the popular When They Cry visual novel series, adding significant creative weight to the project.

According to the official description shared by Konami,

"Shimizu Hinako was living her life as an ordinary teenager. That is, until her town is suddenly shrouded in fog and begins to change in a horrific way. Now, she must explore a town she no longer recognizes while solving puzzles, fighting strange enemies, and doing everything she can to survive... in order to face the ultimate decision that she must make. This is a tale about a beautiful yet terrifying choice."

The reveal trailer shows disturbing imagery of Hinako in various states of distress, covered in blood and wounds, with her Japanese school uniform torn and damaged. While most of the footage consisted of cutscenes rather than gameplay, viewers got an extended look at the game's setting and monster designs.

The trailer also hints at a new version of the series' famous "Otherworld" - instead of the traditional rust and fans, this one appears to feature blood-red flowers, suggesting a fresh visual direction for the franchise.

Silent Hill f will take place in the fictional Japanese town of Ebisugaoka, which is based on the real location of Kanayama, Gero, in Japan's Gifu Prefecture. This setting represents a departure from the American-inspired locations of previous games.

Release Information

While Konami hasn't announced a release date yet, they confirmed that Silent Hill f will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

There was also no additional information about another previously announced Silent Hill project, Townfall, being developed by No Code.

The game's mature rating in Japan suggests that Silent Hill f may feature more intense or graphic content than previous entries in the series, potentially signaling a darker direction for this highly anticipated horror title.
