Sucker Punch Reveals New Details About Ghost of Yotei: Non-Linear Revenge, Massive Open World, and a Wolf Companion

Ghost of Yotei

Sucker Punch Productions has revealed extensive new gameplay and narrative details for Ghost of Yotei, the follow-up to 2020’s acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima.

Set to launch October 2, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5, this new title promises the studio’s most ambitious open-world yet—with more freedom, brutality, and personal storytelling than ever before.

Atsushi’s Path: A Personal Tale of Revenge

Unlike Jin Sakai’s tale of honor, Ghost of Yotei follows Atsushi, a lone female warrior consumed by vengeance. Her targets: the Yotei Six, a deadly group responsible for a past steeped in trauma.

Sucker Punch co-director Nate Fox explained to Famitsu that the game’s core theme is revenge—but it's also about healing.

“Atsushi is vengeful, but she doesn’t just avenge herself,” Fox said. “She overcomes her trauma through the story.”

Atsushi’s journey is visually symbolized by a sash she wears at all times—emblazoned with the names of her six targets, such as “Spider” and “Fox”—a constant reminder of her mission.

Open-World Evolution: Freedom First

The most significant shift from Ghost of Tsushima is the structure itself. According to Fox, Ghost of Yotei features a non-linear campaign—players can hunt the Yotei Six in any order, with no hand-holding. Their locations must be discovered organically through exploration.

“This is the biggest map and the greatest freedom we’ve ever built into a game,” Fox noted.

Set in 1603 around Mount Yotei in Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), the world offers environments that shift naturally between seasons. Expect to traverse flowering meadows, snow-covered fields, and lush spring forests, all coexisting across the massive terrain.

Combat: From Samurai Code to Survival Instinct

Unlike the previous game's protagonist who adhered to a samurai code, Atsu employs more pragmatic fighting methods.

"Atsu is not a samurai, so she does not value the honor of a samurai," Fox explained. "She will use whatever is available on the spot to fight."

This includes a new feature allowing players to pick up and throw weapons dropped by defeated enemies.

While swordplay remains foundational, players will wield an expanded arsenal including:

  • Odachi (two-handed swords)

  • Chain sickles

  • Dual swords

  • Spears

  • Bows and throwable weapons

Combat progression is deeply tied to a master-student system, where players can learn new weapons and techniques from NPC mentors encountered in the wild.

Cultural Inspiration and Worldbuilding

Set on the historical frontier of the Edo period, Ghost of Yotei blends fiction with grounded research. The development team undertook on-site studies in Hokkaido, consulting experts in Ainu culture and visiting locations like Matsumae Castle and local museums.

Jason Connell, co-director, explained that the team wanted to create a setting that balanced beauty with danger—a land untamed and morally gray.

“Ezo is home to people from many backgrounds. It’s a place where danger lurks in nature, and law is yet to be established.”

Atsushi’s journey includes encounters with locals and wildlife alike—including a mysterious wolf companion that plays both emotional and gameplay roles.

The Shamisen and Sound

Music also plays a significant role in Atsushi’s story. She carries a shamisen on her back—an heirloom from her mother that is central to her identity. It’s not just a piece of equipment, but a part of the soundtrack and her motivation.

“The shamisen was her mother’s. Traveling with it is one of her driving forces,” said Connell.

The game’s soundtrack leans on traditional Japanese instrumentation, with the shamisen at its core, much like the shakuhachi in Ghost of Tsushima—but this time, it's personal.

Fiction Rooted in Drama

Unlike its predecessor, which drew from real Mongol invasions, Ghost of Yotei is a fully original story inspired by Japanese period dramas and Western cinematic techniques. According to the team, it’s a narrative that embraces complexity, grief, and change.

Special Edition

For collectors, Sucker Punch has announced a special edition that includes all pre-order bonuses, Digital Deluxe Edition in-game items, and a physical replica of Atsu's Ghost mask built to the same scale as the Ghost of Tsushima Collector's Edition mask.

All eyes are now on October 2, 2025, when Ghost of Yotei finally launches on PlayStation 5.
