Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-orders Delayed in Canada

switch 2 delayed

Nintendo has postponed pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada that were scheduled to begin on April 9. The company made this decision to match the timing with the yet-to-be-determined pre-order date in the United States.

According to MobileSyrup, Nintendo of Canada released a statement explaining the situation: "Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in Canada will not start on April 9, 2025 in order to align with the timing of pre-orders to be determined in the U.S. Nintendo will provide updated information at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged."

This delay follows a similar postponement in the United States last week. Nintendo delayed U.S. pre-orders to "assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions." The timing is significant because U.S. President Donald Trump recently announced new tariffs on various countries, including China and Vietnam, where Nintendo manufactures its hardware.

Despite these pre-order delays, Nintendo confirmed that the Switch 2's release date will remain June 5, 2025, as originally planned. The company unveiled the console during its big Switch 2 Direct and global media preview on April 2, where it also announced the console's software lineup and pricing.

In Canada, the Nintendo Switch 2 base system is priced at $629 CAD, while the Mario Kart World Bundle will cost $699 CAD. Nintendo has also introduced "variable pricing" for games on the new console. Some games like Mario Kart World will cost US$79.99 (approximately C$113), while others like Donkey Kong Bananza will be priced at US$69.99 (about $100 CAD).

Several Canadian retailers, including Walmart Canada and GameStop, have confirmed the pre-order delay through updates to their customers. The situation has created uncertainty, particularly in the U.S. market, as Trump's high-percentage "retaliatory" tariffs on imported goods are set to come into effect on April 9.

While Canadian and American customers wait for a new pre-order date, pre-orders for the Switch 2 have already begun in other regions, including Europe. Nintendo has promised to provide updated information about the new pre-order timeline for North American customers in the near future.
