Sydney Sweeney will play a lead role in the upcoming movie adaptation of the popular video game Split Fiction.
The hit game, which launched on March 6, 2025, is now being transformed into a major film with an impressive creative team behind it.
According to Variety, Jon M. Chu, known for directing "Wicked," will helm the project.
The screenplay is in the hands of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the writing duo behind "Deadpool & Wolverine."
Split Fiction follows the story of two writers, Zoe Foster and Mio Hudson, who become trapped inside fictional worlds they created. The game has been praised for its innovative co-op gameplay and engaging storyline. It's still unclear which of the two main characters Sweeney will portray in the film adaptation.
The movie is being produced by Story Kitchen, a company specializing in video game adaptations. They're the same team behind the successful Sonic films and are also working on adapting Hazelight Studios' previous hit game, "It Takes Two."
As per a report, Story Kitchen is currently shopping the project to Hollywood studios, with many expecting a bidding war for the rights.
Split Fiction has been an enormous success since its release earlier this year. The game sold over two million copies in just its first week, breaking multiple world records. It became the most-played local co-op game on Steam, the most-sold local co-op game within 48 hours, and the most-sold local co-op game within one week of release.
Sweeney, who has risen to fame through her roles in "Euphoria" and "Anyone But You," will not only star in the film but also serve as an executive producer. This is her second movie adaptation project as a producer, as she is also working with Michael Bay to bring Sega’s classic arcade racing title, OutRun, to the big screen.
This adaptation continues the recent trend of successful video game-to-film translations. Story Kitchen seems particularly committed to this space, with other projects including adaptations of "Just Cause," "Dredge," and "Sleeping Dogs" currently in development.
Meanwhile, Hazelight Studios isn't slowing down. Reports indicate they're already working on their next game while their previous title, "It Takes Two," which sold 23 million copies, is also getting a film adaptation that may star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
Currently, no release date has been announced for the Split Fiction movie.
