Valve is planning to release a new standalone VR headset codenamed "Deckard" by the end of 2025. This wireless device is expected to cost around $1,200 as part of a complete bundle.
The information comes from a known Valve leaker called "Gabefollower," who claims to have confirmed the details with several sources. This leaker has built a reputation for accurately sharing Valve-related information in the past, giving some weight to these claims.
Unlike Valve's previous VR headset, the Index, this new device won't require a connection to a PC. Instead, it will run on a modified version of SteamOS, the same operating system used in Valve's popular Steam Deck handheld gaming device, but adapted specifically for virtual reality experiences.
One of the most interesting features of the rumored headset is its ability to play regular games that work on Steam Deck, but displayed on a large virtual screen in VR. This functionality could make the device more versatile than traditional VR headsets that only play VR-specific titles.
Despite its high price tag, Valve reportedly plans to sell each unit at a loss. According to Gabefollower, the company has chosen this approach to ensure they can deliver the best possible experience without cutting corners on quality or features. The bundle is also said to include some "in-house" games or demos that have already been completed.
Further supporting these rumors, leaked models of new VR controllers (codenamed "Roy") were reportedly discovered in a SteamVR update a few months ago. This discovery suggests Valve has indeed been working on new VR hardware.

The timing of this potential release is interesting, as competition in the premium VR market continues to grow with recent headsets from Meta and Apple. Valve's approach could leverage their massive Steam game library as a key advantage over competitors.
Gabefollower also mentioned that "behind-closed-doors presentations of the device could start soon," indicating that an official announcement might not be far away.
