Looks like Kratos might be heading back to his Greek roots! A new God of War game featuring a younger version of Kratos set in Greece is reportedly in development. But before you get too hyped—this isn’t the next big installment from Santa Monica Studio.
For a while now, rumors have been swirling about a return to Kratos' Greek-era days. Some speculated that Sony was working on remasters of the classic God of War games, but that turned out to be false. Instead, it looks like we’re getting something different—a smaller-scale side project that brings Kratos back to where it all began.
Industry insider Jeff Grubb (Giant Bomb) spilled the details during a Game Breaking News segment, saying: “I was explicitly told there would be a God of War side-story this year, starring Kratos, and very likely having to do with the Greek setting.” He also made it clear that this isn’t the next major Santa Monica Studio game—so don’t expect a full sequel.
Even if it’s not a massive follow-up to Ragnarök, this could be great news for fans who miss Kratos’ original mythology. According to Push Square, the game might be something like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales or like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy—a standalone adventure rather than a full-blown sequel.
A month ago, well-known insider Tom Henderson made similar claims in his Insider Gaming Weekly Podcast, stating that Santa Monica Studio is working on a game featuring a younger Kratos set in Greece.
One of the biggest questions? How will this fit into Kratos' timeline? If it’s a brand-new story (rather than a remake), it could explore his early days as a Spartan warrior or maybe even connect his Greek past with his Norse future. A return to Greece also means we might see familiar gods, locations, and enemies from the original trilogy.
Santa Monica Studio has been hiring for a new God of War project, adding fuel to the fire. As for when we’ll actually hear something official? Industry chatter suggests a reveal could happen at a PlayStation Showcase or State of Play in May or June 2025. If the game is really targeting a 2025 release, an announcement could be just around the corner.
Of course, Sony and Santa Monica Studio haven’t confirmed anything yet, so take this with a grain of salt.
